Whale and Dolphin Conservation

For a world where every whale and dolphin is safe and free

Through campaigning, political persuasion, education, and research, we work to ensure that whales and dolphins can live in freedom and safely.

What drives Whale and Dolphin Conservation

WDC, Whale and Dolphin Conservation, is the world's leading nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to the conservation of whales and dolphins. Our vision is a world where all whales and dolphins live in freedom and safety. Working globally and nationally, independently, and scientifically, we advocate for whales and dolphins and the protection of their habitats - oceans and rivers - through campaigns, research, field and conservation projects, and education.

What Whale and Dolphin Conservation has going on in 2024

The harbor porpoise is the only whale native to German waters. On paper, it is a strictly protected species, and no one is allowed to disturb or kill it. Unfortunately, the reality is different. The population in the central Baltic Sea now comprises only about 450 individuals and is endangered. The situation is also dire for harbor porpoises in the rest of the Baltic and the North Sea. Their main threat is death in fishing nets. Gillnet fishing is practically unrestricted, and even in marine protected areas specifically designated for harbor porpoise habitat, these deadly nets are allowed, along with other human activities. In 2024, WDC (Whale and Dolphin Conservation) continues its efforts to protect harbor porpoises. Collaborating with partners and initiating new research projects, WDC aims to fill knowledge gaps regarding the significance of harbor porpoises. The goal is to advocate for more effective conservation measures.
